Alarms in the iPhone’s built-in Clock app ring even in Silent mode or with a Focus on. Yet with some other alarm apps, you may have found that the alarm didn’t sound in Silent mode. The difference lies in how the app makes the alarm ring. Most alarm clock apps on the App Store rely on iOS notifications to sound their alarms.
We compared the Clock app, alarm apps that use notifications, and Alarmo, which uses AlarmKit, a new system in iOS 26.
| Clock app | Notification-based alarm apps | Alarmo (AlarmKit) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silent mode | Rings | No sound | Rings |
| Focus (Do Not Disturb, Sleep and others) | Rings | Notifications may be silenced (*) | Rings |
| When it goes off | An alarm screen (Stop, Snooze) | A notification banner | An alarm screen (Stop, Snooze), also on the Lock Screen, Dynamic Island, StandBy and Apple Watch |
| Alarm sound | Ringtones and songs | Sounds under 30 seconds only | The standard sound, nine built-in sounds, or your own mp3 or wav |
| iOS | Any | Works on older iOS | iOS 26 or later |
Why notification-based alarm apps stay silent
Until now, the main way for an iPhone app to make a sound at a set time was a notification. Notifications follow the “please be quiet” settings of Silent mode and Focus, so they make no sound in Silent mode and may be silenced altogether during a Focus. Notification sounds are also limited to under 30 seconds.
AlarmKit: the same alarms as the Clock app, for other apps
In iOS 26, Apple introduced AlarmKit, which lets other apps use the system alarms that only the Clock app could use before. According to Apple, an AlarmKit alarm breaks through Silent mode and the current Focus when it goes off. It also appears on the Lock Screen, in the Dynamic Island, in StandBy and on a paired Apple Watch. Each app needs your permission first.
AlarmKit is still new, and not many alarm apps use it yet. If you want an alarm app that rings reliably in Silent mode, check whether its description mentions AlarmKit or the iOS 26 alarm system.
Alarmo uses AlarmKit
Alarmo is an alarm and timer app built on AlarmKit. Like the Clock app, it rings in Silent mode and with a Focus on — and it adds what you’d want from an alarm clock.
- Wake up to your own sound: nine built-in sounds, or import an mp3 or wav from the Files app
- Pre-alert: a gentle alert 1–30 minutes before the alarm. It is an AlarmKit alarm too, so it rings in Silent mode
- Snooze: set any interval from 1 to 30 minutes
- One-time alarms: ring once on a specific date, for a flight or an exam
- Timers, free for everyone: name them and run several at once
One alarm is free. Alarmo Premium, a one-time purchase, removes the limit on the number of alarms. There’s no subscription. Alarmo runs on iPhone with iOS 26 or later.
